Daily Dose of Dubai: Almost-Like-Home Edition.
Friday afternoon, Alex and I made our bi-monthly pilgrimage to Safestway, Dubai’s American grocer of repute. According to Dubai urban myth (and oh, how I love Dubai urban myth) the store was once an outlet of the Safeway chain, but somehow lost its right to be part of the franchise. Dubai entrepreneurial spirit intact and American vendor contracts ongoing, it apparently changed its name to the oh-so-slightly-dodgier “Safestway” and proceeded to purvey the goods of freedom undeterred.
As Mark Twain said (and as is often applicable to Dubai urban myths), “never let the truth get stand in the way of a good story” … regardless, I’m thankful that there’s an oasis in this desert where I can procure Post Banana Nut Crunch, StarKist tuna, Vlasic pickles, and Smucker’s Natural Peanut Butter.
It’s the small things.
